Lady Celtics Finish 3rd in KA-MO Classic

Last week the lady Celtics took third in the KA-MO Classic by defeating Metro Academy 49-42. The Celtics started off the week with an impressive 53-44 win against Liberty. The Celtics were lead by Alex Smith's 14 points, 9 of which came from behind the 3-point arc, followed by Patrice Jackson's 11 points. The Celtics ran into a tough Hickman Mills team and lost 30-48 in the semifinals. What seemed to be tired legs from the previous night's game the Celtics lacked any fire on the offensive end. Fortunately the ladies were able to bounce back and win the 3rd place trophy. The Celtics were led by Paulina Pengelley's 11 points followed by Cameron Randle's 9 points while Hailey Houser and Alex Smith each chipped in with 8 points apiece. This week the Lady Celtics are the #1 seed in the Grain Valley Sonic Showdown which they open up play against #8 seed Oak Grove on Monday January 26th.

O'Hara ends Lady Tigers' win streak
January 15, 2009

By Jeff Backe
The Sedalia Democrat

The O’Hara Lady Celtics dictated tempo, used their size advantage inside, and ended the Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers’ four-game win streak with a 56-41 win on Thursday night. The Celtics stifled the Smith-Cotton offense through the first three quarters, holding the Lady Tigers to just 27 points, and held on for the West Central Conference win.

“They made us play the pace they wanted to play,” commented Smith-Cotton coach Chris Parsons. “We’re a quick team, and there were times down the court that we had opportunities, but we tried to hurry through things instead of breaking it down and taking what they gave us. They definitely dominated and got us to do what they wanted us to do.”
Smith-Cotton (7-6, 3-2) got off to a quick start, grabbing an early 6-2 lead on the shooting of Cristian Sharp. Sharp, who finished with 10 points, scored six of those points in the opening quarter.

After the Lady Tigers took the lead, O’Hara increased the pressure on its press. That pressure led to seven first-quarter turnovers as the Lady Celtics grabbed a 15-10 lead heading into the second. “They’re huge. I was hoping our speed would counter that a little bit, but especially in the first quarter we were just shooting into those girls. We weren’t trying to use our body. If you shoot into them, you’re only asking for trouble,” Parsons said.

O’Hara continued to pound the ball inside in the second quarter, taking advantage of a pair of 6’ 2” post players, Victoria Hurt and Hailey Houser. When Hurt and Houser weren’t scoring, they were blocking shots on the defensive end. With the Smith-Cotton offense struggling to score, O’Hara took advantage and built a 30-19 halftime lead.

The Lady Celtics went to the perimeter shot in the third, outscoring Smith-Cotton 11-2 to start the quarter. Houser capped the run when she stepped out and drilled a 3-pointer to put O’Hara in front 41-21. “They are a well-rounded team,” said Parsons of the Lady Celtics. “We tried to pick our poison. Early on we tried to make them beat us from the outside. It worked for us. Then they started getting a little bit inside, so we went to that. Then the outside girls started hitting some shots and driving.”

Baskets by Smith-Cotton’s Andi Rea and Tanacia Smith helped cut into the lead at the end of the quarter, but O’Hara still held a comfortable 43-27 lead as the fourth began.
Another quick offensive start to a quarter, this time an 8-2 burst, pushed the Lady Celtics up 51-29 before the Lady Tigers got clicking on offense. Smith-Cotton was able to cut the lead to 10 in the final minute, but could get no closer.

“We knew we had our hands full tonight. They’re probably the best team in our conference. We’re getting there. We’ve had a pretty good season. When we get to a game situation, we’ve got to do the things we did in practice. If we don’t do that, we’re going to continue to lose to teams like these, and be looking up at the top,” Parsons said.

Kristi Miller had eight points for Smith-Cotton and Rea finished with seven. Houser led O’Hara with 16.

O'Hara's Press Stifles St.Pius X 38-12
Source: The KC Star

The Celtics picked up a 38-12 West Central Conference road victory thanks in part to a press that kept the Warriors reeling for much of the first half.
“Our press is something that really gets us going,” O’Hara coach Mary Haggerty said. “We’ve really worked hard on it, and it’s important for us to jump out and use our speed and athleticism. We have a deep bench, and when we can get running, we feel like we can get out to an early lead.”
Midway through the first quarter, the Celtics had a 15-0 lead and could call off the press.
Perhaps the biggest reason that O’Hara presses is to get the ball to their pair of 6-foot-2 post players: Tori Hurtt and Hailey Houser.
“Even though they are tall, they can get up and down the court,” Haggerty said. “They aren’t traditional post players that are big and lanky and just lumber up and down the court. We try to use them to beat the other teams’ post players. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t.”
On Thursday night, that clearly worked.
The duo combined for just 12 points, but their ability to misdirect shots helped contribute to a frigid shooting performance by Pius.
The Warriors didn’t score until 6 minutes, 20 seconds were left in the third quarter. In the first half, they were zero for 28 from the field.
For the Celtics, who never led by fewer than 20 after the first quarter, one of the biggest challenges was trying to maintain the same intensity that they had had early in the game for the final three quarters.
“Most of the time it’s not difficult,” said O’Hara’s Patrice Jackson, who finished with six points, all in the first quarter. “We try and keep our heads in the game and if we don’t, coach keeps our heads in the game.”
Hurtt and Alex Smith led the Celtics in scoring. Each had eight points. Hillary Torres had five for St. Pius.

Lady Celtics Continue Winning Ways

During the week of January 5th the Lady Celtics had 3 games and were able to win all 3 of those games against Clinton, St.James Academy and St.Pius X.

The team started off the week with a 59-15 victory over Clinton. The Lady Celtics held Clinton scoreless in the 2nd quarter with their relentless defense. Junior Alex Smith was the hot hand for the Celtics as she drained 4 3-pointers and led the team in scoring with 13 points. She was followed by senior Jasmyn Franks with 10 points, while both Hailey Houser and Victoria Hurtt each contributing 8 points apiece in the victory. The Celtics used their full-court pressure to wear out the Clinton Cardinals.

The Lady Celtics had to turn around the very next day and play St. James Academy in Kansas. It was a close game for much of the 1st half with the half-time score being 24-17. The Celtics jumped out with a 8-0 run to open the 3rd quarter. The Lady Celtics deep bench was just too much for the Thunder of St.James. The final score was 49-33. The Celtics were led in scoring by junior Ashley Clark with 12 points, junior Alex Smith with 10 points and senior Paulina Pengelley added 8 points.

The final game of the week was against conference rival St. Pius X warriors. The Celtics used there full-court press to harass and fluster the Warriors for much of the 1st half. The Celtics held St. Pius scoreless for the entire 1st half with the score at half-time being 24-0. The Celtics lost some of their focus and intensity in the 2nd half but went on to win the game 38-12 to improve their record to 7-2 and 5-0 in conference. The Celtics were led in scoring by sophomore Victoria Hurtt with 8 points while seniors Patrice Jackson and Jasmyn Franks each contributing 6 points in the contest.
